What is in your Birthday Candles?

Filed Under (Decorations) by admin on 05-07-2009

You can picture the scene, all those happy, eager little faces squashed around the birthday cake with their minds focussed on which piece of the decorations they want to eat.  Will it be Ben 10’s watch, the Princess’s Tiara or the candy spots from a Ladybug?

The candles are lit, everyone is singing happy birthday and the birthday child makes a wish.  Finally the candles are blown out and removed from the cake leaving wafting sooty smoke, little holes and often coloured deposits in their wake.  Lets hope the deposits also get removed before someone eats them because who knows what is actually in these paraffin wax candles…

As the name suggests, paraffin wax candles are made from a petroleum byproduct.   The wick if not responsibly made could contain lead (which helps to make it  stand up straight whilst the candle is burning).  Both of these factors contribute significantly to indoor air pollutants through toxic smoke.  It has been  documented that paraffin wax candles produce chemicals such as toluene, benzene and naphthalene.  The soot given off from burning candles is the same as that given off by burning diesel fuel (according to David Krause an air quality engineer and former employee of the Florida Dept. of Health).   The paraffin wax candles may also contain synthetic colours and dyes.

We can’t be sure what the ingredients of inexpensive paraffin wax birthday candles are and if the wicks contain lead.  But if you keep in mind a couple of points when buying birthday candles, you will likely avoid the low quality ones.

-   Who manufactures your candles - are they made by a reputable company?

-   Have the candles been certified non-toxic with the standards clearly displayed?

A completely safe alternative to paraffin wax birthday candles are pure beeswax birthday candles.  Beeswax burns cleanly, is naturally more healthy, is not made from processed synthetic ingredients and is virtually dripless.   Beeswax candles are also more environmentally friendly as they are made from sustainable, renewable ingredients.  The smoke produced is clean and the only contains the natural aroma of beeswax.

100% Beeswax Birthday candles are the most healthy addition to your birthday cakes.

What is a birthday banner?

Filed Under (Decorations) by admin on 04-06-2009

Bring a touch of village fair atmosphere to your outdoor party.  These 4 metre long fabric banners are a versatile decoration.  They are beautifully made and are reversible too.  Hang them from trees or use them to edge your outside party table.

They are great outside fluttering gently in the breeze but they are also superb inside.  Brightening up any party room with a splash of colour.  One of the other benefits of these decorations is they can be hung in a bedroom all year round and don’t look out of place.

There are only limited numbers made with each design (depending on the amount of remnant fabric we have to use), so if you like it, don’t delay in contacting us as they may sell out. Our current range includes these banners pictured.  Each comes in a handy matching storage pouch.

Are you looking for something a little bit different and unique with your decorations?  Are you happy buying disposable decorations that sometimes barely make it through the party let alone able to be reused?

Then take a look at our fabulous and ever expanding range of decorations.

All Little Miss Green’s decorations are handmade here in Hong Kong by a great company that uses only remnant fabrics.  Which means that all the ends of rolls, small pieces and offcuts that may otherwise end up as landfill are carefully selected and creatively reused to produce one of a kind or limited edition pieces.

It is very important to us that not only are our products good for the environment but also good for the people who make them.  We are proud to offer these quality products whilst supporting a business that provides ethical and sometimes life-changing employment.

Bez & Oho are a Hong Kong registered company that offers training and future work opportunities and sometimes an alternative path for those with specific needs.  Many of the staff have joined Bez & Oho through the St. Stephen’s Society.  Bez & Oho provide a practical and flexible solution for the people who are working for them, which leaves them time to care for their families and be involved with other activities whilst building self esteem in a safe and meaningful work environment where they can continue to work out solid life values.

It’s the label they use on their products that sums up the heart of what they are doing.  Making original products by hand that incorporate new and creative ideas in resourcing and recycling whilst helping people head in a new direction as well!  To check out their range of super cool handbags and jewellery please take a look at www.bezandoho.com
