Find out why we are so passionate about what we do …

When choosing which products to sell, we make the decision based on our set of standards. As a minimum, products must meet at least one standard but we aim to have products that fit as many as possible. Our guiding standards are

  •     - Is it made from a renewable resource?
  •     - Is it biodegradable and non-toxic?
  •     - Is it made from recycled materials or waste products?
  •     - Is it made under fair trade principles?
  •     - Is it made with sustainably grown resources?
  •     - Is it a long-lasting product that offers an eco friendly alternative to an existing item?
  •     - Does it inspire environmental awareness?

Biodegradable

Means that a product will breakdown naturally, relatively quickly and safely to carbon dioxide, water and organic matter when exposed to moisture heat and micro-organisms. As our biodegradable products are all made from plant based resources they are all non-toxic too.

Bioplastic

is a form of plastic derived from renewable resources, such as corn starch rather than traditional plastics which are derived from petroleum. They are used either as a direct replacement for traditional plastics and are generally regarded as a more sustainable product than plastic production from petroleum.

Fair trade

ensures workers are getting a fair deal for the goods they produce. It is an empowering social movement that often benefits families and communities through payment of decent wages, increased skills, knowledge, health and education. To read more about this very important movement click here www.fairtrade.net

Organic Cotton

is grown from plants that are free from chemicals and are not genetically modified. Pesticides used on conventional cotton contaminate our ground and surface water. Birds are killed from aerial spraying and fish are killed from pesticides polluting streams and rivers. There are significant health risks to farmers from the handling of these known cancer causing chemicals. Recycled

products have been made using the waste of another product. By using these ‘waste’ materials instead of putting them in landfill, the consumption of raw materials is reduced as is energy usage and pollution.

Renewable resource

is a natural resource that can be replenished by natural processes, at a rate equal to or faster than its consumption. Fossil fuels are a non-renewable resource.

Sustainable

means choosing a product that has minimal long term impact. Sustainability is all about preserving the world’s natural resources for future generations.

FSC Wood

FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, FSC is widely regarded as one of the most important initiatives of the last decade to promote responsible forest management worldwide. The FSC label provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value. To learn more click here www.fsc.org

FAQ & Not-so-FAQ

Why don’t you sell typical party products like straws and balloons?

We decided not to stock balloons because although there are ‘biodegradable’ balloons we don’t believe they are completely harmless. As we are based in Hong Kong which is made up of over 200 islands we know that many balloon remnants end up in the surrounding sea and are eaten by birds and fish before they breakdown, often causing them to become sick. We don’t think this is a nice thing to happen and hope that by not selling them we can help save some lives!

Our goal is to cut down on waste wherever we can and we believe that straws (even biodegradable ones) are not a necessary part of a party.

Why don’t you sell candle holders?

We sell beautiful beeswax birthday candles that are virtually dripless. Therefore we have eliminated the need for those pesky little plastic wax catches that are needed with paraffin based candles.

Is silicone really eco-friendly?

Silicone is a durable, long-lasting product. We promote our individual silicone molds as an alternative to disposable paper cupcake liners and bulky plastic chocolate mold trays.

In respect to the cupcake liners it is a great replacement for disposable paper liners as the silicone baking cups can be reused countless times thereby cutting down on resources used. Plastic trays are made from petrochemicals. There has been a lot of media attention linked to possible health risks from leaching of chemicals from plastic when in contact with foods.

We have included a variety of different shapes with the silicone molds which means that you have more choice with the types of chocolates you make without having to buy multiple plastic trays of different shapes for example. The silicone molds are so versatile with their temperature resistance that they can be used in a variety of ways from baked to frozen treats.

Why is your tableware so popular?

We only sell tableware that is biodegradable and completely non-toxic. Unfortunately in Hong Kong these products are not readily available which means many people still use paper, plastic and the dreadful foam varieties. Paper plates are often made using virgin pulp (so forests are sadly wood chipped) and because they have a wax coating cannot be recycled. Plastic plates are made from non-renewable resources and should be recycled. Often they are not which means they just languish in landfill. Plates and cups made from foam are the worst type. Not only do they leach harmful chemicals when in contact with hot food and liquid but they never breakdown. Our tableware is made from renewable and sustainable resources (recycled or byproducts), not from petrochemicals. If you are lucky enough to have access to composting, our tableware can be added to this! Our bamboo plates can be gently hand washed and reused too if they are not heavily soiled.
